Wrangell

Monday June 11th 2012
Rained all day yesterday so we stayed aboard. It was a bit better today although still overcast and drizzling. Vivian is suffering from something she ate so we decided to stay here another night and rest up till she feels better.
Since I had only paid for 2 nights moorage when we arrived I walked to town to pay for another night, get internet for weather forecasts and also visit the grocery store. It was about a mile there and a mile back.

The main street is all excavated for sewer renewal and repaving and with all the rain it is a total muckhole, should have worn my rubber boots. A few years ago the town had around 3000 inhabitants but between the lumber mill closing and the slowdown in the fishery about 1/3 of the population had to leave for work elsewhere. The town is slowly recovering and population is now 2100 . Their economy is based on fishing and tourism, some cruise ships apparently stop here in the summer, but it is far from booming.Lots of old buildings are empty and close to falling down.

Quite a depressing place although the people are very friendly, everybody you meet greets you on passing something you don’t see in larger towns any more.
