Meyers Chuck to Wrangell

Saturday June 9th 2012
Bright sunny morning and flat calm when we awoke, most of the others left around 7:00 AM, must be fishermen. “ Companionship” from Friday harbor left at 8:00 and we left at 8:30. We turned up Ernest Strait then followed “Companionship” up Zimovia Strait all the way to Wrangell.

We saw a couple of dolphins on the way but they were pretty shy and we couldn’t get video.
It was a pleasant trip, sunny and calm all the way. The harbormaster at Wrangell caught our lines and helped us to tie up then drove me to the Harbormaster’s office about a mile away to check in and pay. Afterwards he gave me a tour of Wrangell, it’s pretty small, about 2000 population, then drove me back to the boat. Great service, friendly people and all for less than half the price of marinas in BC. We are at the Heritage Harbor which is fairly new and with excellent docks and facilities but is about a mile from town.

Several nautical guides to cruising Alaska mention the fact that some of the data that today’s charts are based on dates back to the early explorers, Captain Vancouver and even as far back as Captain Cook, This can mean that your GPS position and chart position may not match sometimes. We had our first experience of that today, as we cruised through the harbour entrance our chartplotter’s GPS position showed us motoring over the top of the  breakwater.
We checked in here for 2 nights so we can relax today and take the walking tour tomorrow although not sure what will be open on Sunday.
