Waterfalls and engine alarms

Friday June 1st 2012

We have had some niggling problems with the port engine. When we would turn off the ignition the engine would just keep running. Fiddling with the key would eventually turn it off.
Should have had someone look at it in Anacortes I suppose but I had forgotten about the problem.. Anyway as we arrived at the anchorage last night, as we slowed down, all of a sudden the engine alarm started buzzing on the port engine.I shut it down and restarted it and the heat and oil pressure looked OK.
Anyway the same thing started again this morning and the alarm wouldn’t quit buzzing , I double checked the oil levels and they were OK so I ended up disconnecting the buzzer. I carefully watched temperature and oil pressure all day but they are identical to the other engine so it is definitely a problem with the alarm circuit or the sender somewhere on the engine.
Finally hauled the anchor and left at 10:30 and spent 8 hours to go 80 miles to get us close to Prince Rupert, will anchor again tonight  in Kumealon Inlet and will just have a 4 hour run to Rupert tomorrow.
If yesterday was a “BEAR” day then today was a “WATERFALL” day, there were dozens if not hundreds of waterfalls on both sides of the channel. I guess between the unmelted snow on the upper levels and the nonstop rain all that water has to go somewhere.
This waterfall at the old Butedale cannery site was the mother of them all.

Between the rain , mist and low low cloud there is not much to see on this section . There also is not much traffic, we passed one pleasure boat going north and one going south all day. We also saw one BC ferry, one Canadian Coastguard ship and a tug hauling a barge full of scrapped vehicles and scrap metal. That was it.
